Provence & Cote d'Azur: Racist graffiti targets Le Bonobo beach restaurant at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin

Vandals deface hidden paradise

Tucked away off the coastal path between Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and Monaco is one of those little restaurants we all dream about discovering on the crowded Côte d’Azur. Far from the madding crowd in an idyllic situation, Le Bonobo serves Creole and African-inspired dishes in the summer months, but its owner has had a very difficult start to the season.

Le Bonobo is wonderfully isolated

Disaster struck on 4th May when the storm which battered Nice’s Promenade des Anglais swept away the new sand that had just been laid in preparation for the season at Le Bonobo, but at the weekend something far more sinister occurred.

Owner Christine Bangoura arrived on Sunday morning to find all the tables, chairs and side of the little restaurant (hardly more than a shack) defaced with racist graffiti. The site is very isolated, lost amidst the eucalyptus trees and quasi-tropical vegetation of this stretch of coast and only accessible on foot or by sea, which is all part of its charm. The food is tasty and has always been good value.

An investigation has been launched and the incident is being treated very seriously by the Mayor of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and the police in Menton. CL
