Provence & Côte d’Azur: France by the Sea exhibition in London vote tourist office entry as most original photo

Saint-Tropez snaps up award

Many a good photograph is down to being in the right place at the right time and being quick off the mark to capture the moment: or at least to give that impression. But for the young photographer Petr Krejci, winner of the “Most Original Photo Award” at the “France by the Sea” exhibition in London, there was a little more to it.

A jury of representatives from 18 publications picked out Petr Krejci’s photo (pictured left) which had been put forward as the Saint-Tropez tourist office’s entry to the “France by the Sea” exhibition held in the National Geographic Store on London’s Regent Street from 1st to 7th March.

Petr was one of two students from the photography school in Arles (Ecole supérieure nationale de photographie) who had been given the opportunity last summer to compile a photo-report entitled “Un autre regard sur Saint-Tropez” to obtain unusual photos of this mythical resort. The image of a man laden down with lounger mattresses on Pampelonne beach captures the essence of just how busy this celebrity destination can be in the summer.

Twenty-four seaside towns belonging to the coastal club in Atout France were represented in the 70-plus photographs that were being judged. The exhibition attracted around 40,000 visitors during the week and the award was presented at a ceremony attended by 300 journalists and travel agents. CL
