Provence Côte d'Azur: Firemen who saved Christmas Day wave victim honoured

Nice heros awarded bravery medal yesterday

Yesterday Éric Ciotti, President of the Conseil Général of the Alps-Maritimes and the departmental Fire and Rescue service, recognised and honored the bravery of his Nice firefighters for risking their own lives to save a drowning woman.

On Christmas Day three women who were walking along the coastal path in Nice near La Réserve when high waves crashed down on them. According to local French newspaper, Nice Matin, one of them Agnès, a 48-year old woman was swept into the water from the rocks and caught in a violent whirlwind of water in the deep cove.

If it wasn’t for the bravery of the city’s firefighters and the quick thinking of her daughter, Séverine who ran for help she would have most likely have drowned.

For her bravery and remaining cool under the circumstances Séverine was awarded a medal. Her mother is still recuperating in hospital at L’Archet in Nice. According to reports she suffered three successive cardiac arrests as a result of being submerged in the icy water.

Walkers should take great care when walking near the water’s edge when the sea is agitated. In our February issue of The Riviera Times newspaper we will publish a feature on the dangers of the sea for those walkers taking advantage of the coastal paths.
