Residents warned of gale force waves
Côte’s deathly waves may strike today
Hard to forget the deadly waves at Christmas time, which swept several walkers out to sea, causing loss of life to three. As a result of such avoidable tragedies perhaps people will pay more attention to warnings. There is a weather alert for the Alpes-Maritimes today with a high risk of gale force waves reaching up to 2.5 metres on coastal paths and roads.
Between Villeneuve Loubet and Théoule from 10am and 9pm with a peak during the afternoon walkers and drivers are advised to be very careful. The safest bet is to avoid routes by the sea.
In such adverse weather conditions town officials along the Riviera close off access to dangerous areas, especially the beaches and coastal paths. However, as we saw in December and January some people do not realize the danger they place themselves in by walking past barriers and not paying heed to warnings signs posted.
Read our interview in the February issue of The Riviera Times with Mr Benoit Kandel, Adjoint au Maire de Nice explaining the precautions that the city takes to avoid accidents. Thanks to Nice’s actions and the vigilance of its rescue service the city did not experience any drownings in 2009.
