Travelling at a snail’s paceProtests at the price of fuelThose travelling on the A8 today, the autoroute between Aix-en-Provence and Italy, will not have failed to notice the protests this morning, as they were delayed in the heavy traffic. This is due to large numbers of lorries travelling at a snail’s pace, as well as blockades at toll plazas and roundabouts. The action began at 7am and will last for 24 hours. The Conseil Général has informed us that the following locations are affected: RD (Route départemental) 6202 –direction Nice/Carros RD 6202 bis- direction Nice/Carros RD 6007 Cagnes-sur-Mer/ ZI Villeneuve-Loubet- both directions RD 901- exit of ZI in the direction of Nice RD 1- direction St. Laurent-du-Var/Carros Angry motorists across France have united to show their objections to soaring fuel prices at the appeal of two organisations in the sector, FNTR (National Federation of Road Transport) and UNOSTRA (National Union for Automobile and Road Transport Trade Union Organisations). Today’s action follows that of the 16th June, when more than 3000 lorries rallied together and caused traffic jams by travelling so slowly. Even more lorries are anticipated to be out in force today, as all regions of France will join in, and the protest is expected to be very important in terms of kilometres of traffic jams, especially on the Francilienne and the main roads of cities. It seems that the French feel they are being suffocated by fuel prices and that they are suffering in comparison to their European rivals, as the cost of filling up is said to represent 30% of French citizen’s expenditure. Whether they agree with the protestors or not, locals and holiday-makers on the French Riviera will certainly be affected by today’s actions. It is hoped that things will be back to normal tomorrow.
