Nice bus overhaul

More buses and more drivers

Following the revolution of the trams, it’s time now for the revolution of the buses. From the 30th June the buses will be more frequent on many lines and a hundred new drivers will be hired, following voting yesterday by local councillors. New buses are to be bought and 35 other buses, which were to be sold, will now be kept.

The cost will be 9.4 million euro a year, but there is certainly a need for this. The complaints of those who use the buses have reached an all-time high this summer. The buses seem to be victims of their own success with more and more passengers, mainly since the introduction of the single journey ticket costing 1 euro, an extremely competitive price when a litre of petrol costs 1.50 euro. There has been an impressive increase in people using the network, the figures having risen from 34.5million in 2005, to 37 million in 2006, to 40 million in 2007, and the expected figure for 2008 is more than 50 million.

The improvements to the bus system will clearly be beneficial for the environment and for Nice, and this is probably the reason why the changes, whose effects will be seen from Monday, were voted for unanimously.
