African tribe visit the Var for lessons in bio agricultureThe Maasai learn new techniques from French farmersIf you happened to meet them on the plains of the Kenyan savannah you wouldn’t bat an eyelid, but Maasai tribesman have been turning heads in Cannet-sur-Maures, the Var, during their recent visit to the department which ended yesterday. Five Maasai warriors, each a cattle breeder back in Kenya, spent the last month in the South of France learning new techniques in natural cultivation from Var wine producer and market gardener, Jean-Marie Arbrefeuille. M. Arbrefeuille believes that the climate of the Var is quite similar to that of the Serengeti, making the French Riviera an ideal place for the visiting Maasai to learn such techniques to bring back to their farming villages in Kenya. Also, the tribesmen learned further techniques for water management in southern Roussillon with a view to using and maintaining hydraulic water-pumping equipment largely funded by the French Ministry of Foreign affairs. M. Arbrefeuille praised Maasai philosophy towards nature. The Maasai consider themselves the guardians of nature and believe Man should act in harmony with nature rather than against it.
