Is the Côte d’Azur air dangerous?

Air pollution has been linked to mortality in the French Riviera

It has been reported that every year, almost 180 premature deaths are due to bad air quality on the Côte d’Azur. And throughout France, atmospheric pollution is the cause of 9500 deaths- that is more than the number killed on the roads.

Atmo Paca, the agency responsible for studying the air quality in the region, have assembled a panel of specialists in Nice this week in order to reflect on the consequences of pollution. One of their main objectives is to give better information to the public.

On the Côte d’Azur, pollution is not linked to the industry sector, in fact industries are hardly present here. Instead, it is the density of the population and the traffic which create problems. There exist short and long term health risks due to pollution. People particularly at risk include those who already suffer from health issues including cardio-vascular problems and eye irritations.

A European directive on air quality is pushing for a considerable drop in pollution by 2010, particularly from transport. And we’re not doomed just yet, if new measures are put in place, around 140 of the annual deaths due to pollution can reportedly be avoided.
