Monaco: Grimaldi Forum stands by decision not to renew the Karé(ment) concession in June

Rumpus over night club closure

One of Monaco’s most popular night clubs seems determined to fight a decision by the Grimaldi Forum not to renew its five-year concession when it finishes in June. The Karé(ment) bar-discotheque is on the first floor of Monaco’s cultural and congress centre, and attracts youngsters from as far away as Nice and Menton, as well as Monaco.

However, it has come under fire from detractors for allowing in under-age drinkers and for a lack of security leading to disturbances outside the venue, particularly when people are leaving in the early hours of the morning.

Both claims are refuted by the managers who argue that spot-checks on ID cards are carried out and that minors are allowed in if accompanied by an older relative. The police have also confirmed that they were only called out six times last year for incidences related to the discotheque.

Claims by the Karé(ment) that it was side-lined in the process of finding a successor are denied by the Grimaldi Forum which says that the venue is not suitable for a disco and that the Karé(ment) has not been respecting the original conditions of the contract for a bar with tapas snacks.

The new concession holder is the Michelin-star chef Alain Llorca, who has worked at Nice’s Negresco Hotel and the Moulin de Mougins, and who will open the Llorca Café serving breakfasts and lunches in the autumn. No doubt residents in the vicinity will welcome the change. CL
