Obama's new man in Monaco

A ceremony was held in Monaco last week to mark the arrival of Charles Hammerman Rivkin as the new American Ambassador to the Principality of Monaco. At the event, Ambassador Rivkin passed the Lettre de Créance,to HSH the Sovereign Prince Albert, which is an act of great importance for any incoming ambassador.

Ambassador Rivkin, who is also the American Ambassador to France, was accompanied by Kathleen Riley, the American General Counsel in France and Monaco, and was greeted at the palace door by the guard of honor of the Compagnie des Carabinier. After the ceremony, Prince Albert held a private reception in the Ambassador Lounge.

Monaco and the US have officially shared diplomatic relations since the 14th of November 2006 but the two countries have been strongly tied by their history, culture and economy for a far greater period of time.

Despite their good relationship overall, they do disagree strongly over certain key issues, in particular environmental protection, sustainable development and humanitarian action. However, with the arrival of Ambassador Rivkin and, more fundamentally, President Obama, it is hoped that US policy in these areas will be developed and will be more in line with the Principality’s in the near future.
