Monaco: Work on Monaco’s controversial 170 metre high Odeon tower is underway

Foundations of Monaco skyscraper are laid

After long months of tortuous negotiations and discord, the 370 million euro contract with Vinci Construction has finally left the ground. Opponents of the project – including some residents of neighbouring Beausoleil who will be overshadowed by it – brought their protest all the way to the President Nicolas Sarkozy but to no avail.

The tower has also been in the news recently as it is believed to be part of a corruption investigation that led to the arrest last year of the Beausoleil mayor Gerard Spinelli.

Comprising twin towers of 47 and 49 floors on avenue d’Annonciade, the project is expected to take 56 months and will be ready in the summer of 2014.

When completed it will be the third tallest in France (Monaco is surrounded by French territory) after the Montparnasse tower (210m) and the Total tower (187m).
