Monaco: Nelson Mandela's charity looking for a helping hand

Children's choir seeks accommodation

Twenty-five years ago a human rights activist Ray Barnett, originally from Ireland and living in Canada, heard a news report that 150,000 African children were starving to death and decided to go to Uganda to see what he could do.

Moved by the desperate situation of the people whilst at the same time touched by their spirit, it was the sound of a little boy singing that gave Ray the idea to form a choir. A few months later, the first African Children’s Choir made their debut in North America. Now, two decades on, young people across the African continent have embarked on careers as doctors, teachers, lawyers and many other professions as a result of the Choir’s education program.

The highly anticipated trip to the Principality is hoping to raise both money and awareness (particularly about the plight of Africa’s 12 million orphans). However bringing the children to France is not a simple business and organisers are now making an appeal to local people in the Monaco area to make the trip come true. This is where you could help…

There are twenty-three children, aged between 6 and 10 years old, accompanied by nine young adult chaperones, and all need somewhere to stay for the duration of the visit. The African Children’s Choir would thus appreciate any offers of accommodation – be it in a hotel or with a host family – either in Monaco or the surrounding area.
