After 12 years of waiting, a new State-funded museum has been officially opened in Marseille. French President François Hollande launched the 191 million euro project in a grand ceremony on Tuesday afternoon. After six years of planning and construction, Cap d’Ail has finally unveiled its new neighbourhood of Saint Antoine. Provence & Côte d’Azur: Following an increase in wolf attacks, the tables have turned on the deadly predator
A controversial wolf cull has been authorised in two areas of the Alpes Maritimes region following an increase in deadly attacks on livestock. Nearly 6,000 farm animals were killed by wolves last year, amounting to a staggering 15 million euros worth of losses and the south of France was among the worst hit regions. Tensions have been particularly fraught recently between the local Nice government and its Romany gypsy population. Following a “peaceful evacuation” of the Rue Beaumont squat in the city last week, the displaced Roma families have now taken over a different location in Nice with the help of the Right to Housing Association, and Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi is far from happy with the new arrangement. France: The Republic has been labelled as Europe's biggest user of cannabis, while cocaine consumption is on the rise
France has emerged as Europe's biggest fans of cannabis, according to a report by French drugs watchdog OFDT. Cocaine is also becoming increasingly popular in the Republic, while cigarettes continue to be a national pastime despite rising prices and indoor smoking bans. The OFDT has pointed to the French youth as the biggest concern, with nearly a quarter of 16-year-olds claiming to light up on a daily basis. Roma families were evacuated yesterday from the rue Beaumont squat. Following makeshift stove explosions and local tensions, the premises has long been the target of Mayor Christian Estrosi's attention, while social workers and humanitarian organisations try to find solutions for the newly homeless group.
