World’s equine elite comes to Cannes

After stopping in Valencia, Hamburg and Milan, the "Global Champions Tour 2010" will arrive tomorrow in Cannes.

This year the high-level show jumping competition, featuring 30 of the sport’s best equestrians, will sit side-by-side with an international dressage contest, the World Dressage Masters. Altogether, the prize money at stake over the weekend amounts to 285,000 euros, with first prize being 95,000 euros.

The championships take place at the Stade des Hespérides, close to the Croisette. Preparations for the event are already in full swing: jumps up to 1.5 meters high have been erected and several tons of sand have been delivered for the floor. The horses are now staying in luxurious riding stables at the town’s port.

Perhaps less famous but just as exciting as the jumping contest, and arguably more elegant, is the world-class dressage competition. After taking in Palm Beach, Florida and Munich in Germany, The World Dressage Masters will entertain equestrian fans on the Côte d’Azur before it heads to its final destination of Hickstaed in the UK.

After the competition in Cannes has been wrapped up the Global Champions Tour 2010 only has to travel down the road to Monte-Carlo for its next stop, with the Principality hosting an event from the 24th to the 26th of June.
