Sports: UEFA chooses France over Turkey to host the 2016 European Football Championship

Nice will host Euro 2016

Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice and France's Minister for Industry, is excited: “This is great news for our city - for over two years we have been constructing a big stadium for OGC Nice, in the hope that it will also be used for Euro 2016 matches. We are very happy about UEFA’s decision. It is an honour for France to be the host country and for Nice to be one of the 12 nominated cities.”

Those in Nice present at a live screening of UEFA’s announcement from Geneva on 28th May were overjoyed when the envelope was opened and the name of France was read out. The Côte capital has made a significant contribution to the nation’s success by participating in its campaign. Nice not only offers the Grande Stade, of course, but it is also a popular and attractive destination for tourists, is environmentally proactive and has a good record when it comes to security.

“This only increases my ambition to make Nice the city of sport,” Estrosi added. “To host Euro 2016 successfully and eventually provide OGC Nice with an improved stadium that will help them to become one of the best clubs in the country is our goal.”

Construction of the Grande Stade is an ongoing project which if all goes to plan should be completed by June 2013. The stadium is to be integrated into the Eco-Vallée, a massive development from the coast to the foothills of the lower alps that is set to be a major business and residential district with a strong emphasis on the environment and eco-friendly technologies.
