Algeria gained its independence from France 50 years ago, and a total of 650,000 French people born and raised in the country (les pieds-noirs) left Algeria in the months before and after independence. While not all of them migrated to France, hundreds of thousands did, many of them arriving in the towns of Marseille, Nice and Toulon which were ill prepared to receive them.

State Real Estate For Sale
There are 18 state owned properties ‘surplus to requirements’ up for sale in the Var through the sub-division of Departmental Public Finance, France Domaine, which hopes to sell them by the end of this year. The buildings and tracts of land (some of which cannot be built on) are officially estimated to have a total market value of 8.5 million euros.

What prices were properties fetching in 2011?
The marked pick up in business for real estate agents last year seems unlikely to be repeated in the foreseeable future, and at least for 2012. René Pallincourt, head of the National Federation of Estate Agents (FNAIM), recently announced that 2011 was an exceptional year. And the 2011 figures issued by notaries who finalise and record sales are there to prove it: the best ever, with 850,000 completed sales.
