Var reacts to rent freeze plan

A proposal by the Minister of Housing, Cécile Duflot, to control rental prices has been met with stiff opposition by the Var branch of the FNAIM (National Federation of Real Estate Agents).

Around 30 per cent of the Var’s houses and apartments are not owner-occupied, and an EU directive advocates free-market prices, claims the Var FNAIM.

If the new rules Duflot proposes to prevent landlords from raising rental prices does come into effect in September, many proprietors will go for short-term seasonal lets where there is no control, says the Agence Départementale pour l’Information sur le Logement du Var (ADIL).

At present, the average annual increase in rental prices for long-term lets in the Toulon Provence Méditerranée (TPM) area, which includes Hyères to the east and Six Fours to the west, is three per cent.
