According to Météo France, the alert zone will run from Fos in Bouches-du-Rhône to Hyères in the Var, from this afternoon until 10pm this evening.

The orange alert comes at the same time as storm winds and torrential rain are lashing the northwestern Brittany coast. A reported 400,000 households were thrown into darkness last night as electricity supplies were cut.

Wind gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour pounded France’s western coast in the early hours of Friday 16th December, causing a cargo ship heading towards Malta to run off course .

The storm hung over the northernmost Pas-de-Calais region of France this morning and was headed eastward in the direction of Belgium, according to the latest update from France's national weather service.
