Var on water shortage alert
Water restrictions to avoid drought this summer
Residents in the Var have been strongly advised to economise on water consumption as far as possible to avoid the possibility of serious water shortages in the hot summer months.
According to a press release from the Préfecture, the department has designated five alert zones to facilitate management of the problem. They are: Argens; Verdon; Fleuves Côtiers; Arc, Huveaune et Durance and Siagne. A system of coded alerts has also been created, whereby it will be possible to identify how grave the problem is at any one time.
Locals have been urged not to use water unnecessarily - for example, not to use water sprinklers thoughout the day and night, or to refill swimming pools unless absolutely necessary. Industrial and commercial activity has also been limited.
