France: 2.88 million jobseekers in France
Unemployment hits record high
Unemployment in France has soared to its highest level in over 12 years, revealed the Labour Ministry yesterday. The latest statistics showed that last month the number of registered jobseekers rose by 16,000 to reach a record 2.88 million.
According to the French government, the number of jobseekers is a staggering 7.2 per cent higher than this time last year. The increase is a reminder of the weak labour market amid the current economic crisis, which has left surging unemployment across the country.
As the country continued to suffer financial strains last month, the PACA region was no exception. According to INSEE, there were 375,000 registered jobseekers in March 2012, which reached a new high of 6.4 % compared to the same period in 2011.
The number of young people looking for jobs in the PACA region also rose to 4.7%, totaling 47,800 official jobseekers.
