Provence & Côte d'Azur: A substitute for a UMP candidate in the Var was severely assaulted on Wednesday
UMP politician assaulted
Eline Enriquez-Bouzanquet received two punches in the face, a hit on the leg and a load of racial abuse just before returning to her home in Saint Dionisy at 11pm. It is believed that the attacker is a strong supporter of the National Front party.
The victim was immediately taken to hospital and a police investigation is currently underway to determine the details of the violent assault.
Enriquez-Bouzanquet is also the substitute for UMP candidate Etienne Mourret at this year's legislative campaign, which means that she could take the seat if he won.
Mourret has condemned the attack but has refused to receive any form of protection for the last days before the second round of the election begins on Sunday.
Mourret is not prepared to give up a fight and is determined to stay in the game despite coming third in the first round of the legislative election with 23.89 per cent of the votes, behind FN candidate Gilbert Collard (34.57 per cent) and socialist candidate Katy Guyot (32.87%).
