Provence & Côte d'Azur: Nice tram drivers launched a strike on Saturday afternoon after an attack on Line 1 of the tram route

Tram driver attacked in Nice

Trams came to a halt on Saturday afternoon in Nice after a driver was severly beaten around the head while attempting to break up a fight between passengers. Police have launched an investigation and have now tightened control along tram routes amid growing anger by tram workers.

A tram driver was reportedly aggressively punched in the head in Nice city centre

The attack occurred at around 3pm at the Opéra-Vieille Station in the heart of the city centre.

The driver was reportedly punched in the head after leaving his cabin to break up a quarrel at the door of the tram. The victim was transported to Saint Roch Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Following the incident, around 20 drivers across the tram network immediately walked off the job for an hour and a half. It isn't the first time violent attacks have occurred on the tram routes. Earlier that day, another fight had reportedly broken out between passengers in Virgile Barel, resulting in two injuries.

Once services resumed, police were on-board for the rest of the day to ensure the safety of staff and the public. Video footage on the tram has been seized by police and a man and two women were arrested on Saturday evening.
