Provence & Côte d'Azur: Rail disruption across the country today after workers walked off the job.

Trains disrupted as rail worker is stabbed

Rail users faced a day of disruption across the country when workers walked off the job. The strike started in the east of France yesterday after a ticket inspector was stabbed eight times whilst working on the Lyon-Strasbourg train. The workers have been told "it is not by stopping the trains that we stop the madman."

Rail passengers faced disruption today.

Emergency bus services were organised last night and today, however passengers have still found themselves stranded at railway stations.

Following a meeting at 12pm today by SNCF leaders, staff have gone back to work. SNCF president Guillaume Pepy told the Nice Matin, "Emotions are running high but it serves nothing to penalise rail users because of an unbalanced individual who committed a very rare mad act." Transport Minister Thierry Mariani said he “understood the disgust” of SNCF workers but added that "it is not by stopping the trains that we stop the madman."

The network is slowly getting back to normal. For those travelling home this evening, the Nice Côte d'Azur and Alpes-Maritimes councils have organised for extra buses to run on the number 100 Nice-Beaulieu-Monaco line.
