Provence & Côte d'Azur: Eduardo Chillida retrospective at the Maeght Foundation
Touchy feely art
The Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul is giving visitors a unique opportunity to do just that. Chillida's monumental sculptures, as well has his engravings and collages, will be on display until the 13th of November, in an exhibition that recognises the long friendship between the Maeght and Chillida families.
Using indoor and outdoor space, the expo opens with a chronological tour enabling the spectator to understand Chillida's work. It then presents his iconic sculptures. The exhibition has been co-ordinated by Ignacio Chillida, the artist's son. Interestingly, Aimé Maeght encouraged and supported the young artist at the start of his career in Paris in 1948. Known as the “artist of iron”, this exhibition is a chance to discover his use of different materials including wood, alabaster, chamotte, granite, and concrete. Certain works have never been seen in public. The retrospective also displays his 'gravitations': a technique between collage and sculpture created by the artist in the mid-eighties.
