Provence & Côte d’Azur: Boy scales fence before attack

Tiger bites off teen's finger

A raging tiger has bitten off the tip of a teenage boy’s finger at a circus in Mandelieu. The 19-year-old is believed to have climbed over the safety barriers in order to get a closer look at the wild cat.

The incident occurred at around 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon at the Lydia Zavatta circus in Mandelieu.

Various eyewitnesses told local newspaper Nice Matin that the teenager, who was slightly intoxicated at the time, ignored the 'no entry' signs and climbed through the barriers, running straight into the path of the angry tiger.

He was taken to the Oxford clinic for treatment.

Autorities told Nice Matin that the circus wasn’t in breach of any health and safety regulations, and that “all safety rules were met,” adding that it was the fault of a wreckless visitor.
