Provence & Cote d'Azur: New statues revealed today to honour the countries represented at the global summit in November

Sweet times await G20 leaders in Cannes

Sweets will be popping up in Cannes today, but it’s not the type of confectionery that melts in your mouth. 55 monumental statues will be exhibited in Cannes, paying homage to the nations of the world in the form of giant candy wrappers.

The works by Laurence Jenkell, an artist in Vallauris, have been chosen by the authorities to decorate the town for the G20 summit taking place November 3rd and 4th 2011.

Each sweet is painted with the flag of the nations that make up the G20, the European Union, and other countries invited to the conference. In creating the colorful statues the artist was inspired by both the New-Realism and Pop Art traditions as well as digital technology. The delicious looking collection, with statues ranging from 2 to 5 meters high, will be displayed on the Croisette and along the roads leading up to Hotel Carlton. Jenkell will have the honor of presenting her works of art to the attending Heads of State, who will tackle major global economic issues at the summit.

Dubbed the Flag Series, Jenkell’s artistic works have been exhibited all over the world, including Paris, Monaco, London, and New York.

With the 2011 G8 summit wrapped up in Deauville last week, all eyes now turn from the North to the South of France in anticipation of the next major rendezvous for Obama, Cameron and co. this November in Cannes.
