Provence & Côte d'Azur: Cold snap to last through to the weekend

Snow forecast for the Var as temperatures plummet

Residents across the Riviera are preparing to brace themselves as the weather takes a turn for the worst this week. The normally bright, warm and sunny Côte d’Azur will feel more like wintry Britain as rain, snow and ice is forecast for the coming week.

A band of cold weather is set to hit the region, as temperatures plummet to single figures, with outbreaks of snow predicted in the Var.

In Brignoles, temperatures are expected to tumble to –1 degrees, with the prospect of freezing rain and snow making driving conditions treacherous across inland areas of the Var.

Over in the Alpes-Maritimes the forecast doesn’t look any brighter, with showers hitting coastal areas. In Cannes temperatures will fall as low as 2 degrees, with Nice experiencing similarly cold weather. Snow is expected in the department tomorrow in Grasse with scattered showers .

The cold snap is going to hang around for the rest of the week, with a few flakes of snow around as temperatures across the region hit minus figures on Thursday. Things will feel a little warmer at the weekend with temperatures creeping into double figures.

Winter coats and scarves will need to be dug out of the closet as even the most hardened of souls will start to feel the cold
