Unions argue that the plans, as part of European Railway changes, could lead to job losses and impact negatively on working conditions.

According to Laurent Russeil, general secretary of CGT rail union, the strike will take place from 8pm on Monday 7th November until 8am on Wednesday 9th.

The European day of action will be held ahead of a meeting by the European Parliament in Brussels from 15th to 17th November 2011, discussing plans to create a single market on the rail network and encourage new private business.

SNCF leaders envisage minimal disruption, as three out of four services on the TER local trains are expected to be running as usual, while the TGV will operate normally.
