Refreshing restaurant sprays could be harmful

A top French European Parliamentary member has warned that the cooling spray machines used in many restaurants along the Riviera could in fact be bad for your health, saying, "We must pay attention to the risks posed [by the equipment] and in particular the risk of contracting legionnaires disease."

The sprays have been popular with restaurant owners and their customers for several years and are used predominately throughout the hot summer months.

But the appearance of the sprays this year have got one man very worried. Gaston Franco, the current Mayor of Saint Martin Vesubie as well as an EU member, has claimed that the cooling systems can cause respiratory illnesses due to their usage of water.

"We must be vigilant in the use and purchase of these sprays," says Franco.

In response, the EU has begun an evaluative investigation into the potential risks and illnesses posed by the water cooling sprays - brumisateur in French.
