Monaco: Principality was at the centre of the trial

Redknapp cleared of misusing Monaco account

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has been cleared of using a Monaco bank account to avoid paying taxes.

It ends a two-week trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court and a five-year police investigation into football corruption that also involved Sheffield Wednesday owner Milan Mandaric, and Portsmouth Chief Executive Peter Sorrie from a previous trial.

It was revealed that Redknapp had traveled to Monaco in 2002 at the request of Mandaric to open an offshore account. Prosecutors claimed that Redknapp used the account, set up in the name of his dog Rosie, to deposit payments over 189,000 pounds.

The defense argued that the account was unrelated to football and was set up for investments made in U.S. stocks on Redknapp’s behalf by Mandaric. If the money received was for bonuses, as was alleged, it would be considered employer to employee transactions and should have been taxed.

The case against Redknapp began when he admitted to having the Monaco account in 2006.
