Provence & Côte d'Azur: Beaches closed due to water pollution

Red flags go up in Saint Laurent Du Var

Two beaches in Saint Laurent Du Var have been temporarily closed due to pollution. An order from the local town hall has banned swimming in the water following the shock discovery of a strain of E Coli bacteria.

Mayor of Saint Laurent Du Var said to local media France 3, "We are looking for the source... I believe it may have come from a nearby treatment plant."

While this form of the potentially deadly bacteria is not seriously harmful, it can cause irritation to the ears and throat.

The red flags were raised when recent studies of the water quality revealed traces of the bacteria. Fresh investigations are underway but for now Cousteau and Lansberg beaches will remain closed to bathers until results reach a satisfactory standard.

Also in Nice! The Concierge of Le Negresco told me that some people have been brought to the hospital.
