A Draguignan company has been ordered to pay over 500,000 euros in fines for environmental damages. Pizzorno Environnement was found guilty of illegally dumping dangerous substances in landfill sites over a three year period.

The company has been heavily fined for environmental damage

Following a correctional court hearing on Thursday 15th December in Draguignan, integrated waste management company Groupe Pizzorno Environnement (GPE) and one of their subsidiaries, la Société Moderne d’Assanissement  (SMA) were given 448 fines of 800 euros each and a further 174 fines of 300 euros each.

Collectively, they were found guilty of the irresponsible disposal of dangerous substances in Bagnols-en-Forêt. GPE and SMA have also received a 100,000 euro fine for placing illegal waste in an industrial incinerator in Antibes, bringing the company's total punishment to 511,400 euros.

The Var waste company SOVATRAM, which is part of Pizzorno Environnement, has also been forced to cough up 10,000 euros in fines.

Between 2004 and November 2007, GPE disposed of around 87,000 tonnes worth of dangerous substances. The company also wrongly deposited sludge from a purifying station in Fayence.

Pizzorno Environnement and its societies have filed for appeal, with a review of the case taking place on 29th March 2012.
