Provence & Côte d'Azur: Nice splashes out 400,000 euros on beach safety

Nice increases beach safety

With thousands of people taking a dip in the Baie des Anges each day during the summer months, keeping an eye on everyone can become difficult. So, the City of Nice has decided to allocate extra money to the service this year in the name of better safety and security.

Throughout the summer, 11 different life guard stations will be dotted along the Niçois bay. Between two and three qualified life guards will in turn be standing watch over swimmers and sunbathers from 9am until 6.30pm at night.

Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi along with President of the Alpes Maritimes General Council and President of the Alpes Maritimes Firefighters Organisation Eric Ciotti were on Nice's Forum pubic beach yesterday to launch the new initiative, dubbed "Operation Beach Safety". Costing an estimated 400,000 euros, it is hoped that the extra surveillance on the beaches will reduce the time is takes emergency services to reach those in need while reassuring residents and tourists alike.

Applications for seasonal life guard positions are now being taken, so if you think you're up to the job and are certified to do so, get in touch with SDIS 06!
