The new proposals, put forward by MPs from the Road Safety Committee, looked at 40 different ways to reduce the number of deaths on the country’s roads. Among them, they suggested the law be strengthened for those who are caught driving whilst using a mobile phone, with a three point penalty as opposed to the current two points. They also say hands-free mobile phone kits should be banned as they are a distraction to drivers.

In addition, MPs have proposed the blood-alcohol limit for new drivers be reduced to 0.02 from the present 0.05, and anyone caught driving with a blood alcohol concentration of more than 0.08 should have 8 points taken from their license.

According to figures from l'Observatoire Départemental de Sécurité Routière du département des Alpes-Maritimes, drink driving and carelessness accounted for 11 out of 42 deaths in the Alpes-Maritimes.
