It was revealed during a meeting on Wednesday 14th December in Paris between Minister of Health Xavier Bertrand and the PPP, (Association des Porteuses de Prothèses PIP) that up to nine cancer cases have been connected to the deadly implants.

Amongst those, five are cancer of the breast. Two of the nine are a very rare form of cancer, and are linked to the two suspected deaths.

53-year-old Edwige Ligoneche died in a Marseille cancer care clinic on Monday 21st November following a battle with lymphatic cancer. It is suspected that her death was caused by the faulty breast implant that was filled with an industrial gel.

Meanwhile, health union Afssaps revealed a new case on 5th December. A woman from Le Gers who had been wearing the PIP implants for several years died from large cell lymphona cancer in 2010.

Jean-Yves Grall, General Director of Health in France, was also present at the meeting and took the time to assure women still wearing the implants that, "special attention to the PIP implants will continue."

Amongst the suspected 30,000 existing PIP carriers is Sylvie Maffre from the Var. She told local newspaper Nice Matin that she hopes the battle to get full compensation for those still wearing the implants will be successful. "There have been some developments along the way. The Minister of Health seems to understand that this is now a matter of urgency."

The next scheduled meeting between the PPP and the state will take place in January 2012.
