Provence & Côte d'Azur: Proposed breath tester to start car engines
New breathalyzer device for the cars of drink-drivers
Magistrates can now order drink-drivers to fit the breath-test machine, called ethylotests anti-demarrage machines (EAD), to their cars if they continue to flout the law. It prevents the engine from starting if the blood-alcohol reading is above the legal limit.
The EAD’s will work as an exchange for the offender’s driving licence. Magistrates will order them to hand over their licence, and in return receive a certificate stating that they are only able to drive if there is a device installed in their vehicle. The penalty can last for anywhere between six months and three years.
The system is already compulsory for new school buses, and has been trialled in the Rhônes-Alpes region, with more than 350 drivers forced to use the equipment. Figures show that only a quarter of those reoffended, yet the number soared once the EAD was removed.
The cost of the device, met by the driver, is estimated to be anything up to 1000 euros per vehicle. However, it may also be rented for 130 euros per month. Drivers who try to get around the device will face fines of 1,500 euros.
Drink driving is the number one killer on our roads, responsible for over 25 per cent of car-related deaths.
