Provence & Côte d'Azur: The two-wheel vehicles accounted for nearly half of all road deaths in 2011

Motorbike rider killed

A 42-year-old man has died after his scooter collided with a car on Saturday evening in Nice. It is one of the first road fatalities of 2012.

Emergency services were called to the accident at around 9pm on Saturday evening on the junction of rue Barla and rue Boyer in Nice. The motorcyclist reportedly collided with a car containing two young girls travelling in the opposite direction.

The man died from his injuries on the way to hospital. The two girls escaped with minor injuries.

The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined. However, police sources told Nice Matin the motorcyclist had been under the influence of alcohol.

In the Var and PACA regions, nearly half of all deaths last year involved motorbikes and bicycles. The majority of these were men aged in their mid-thirties.
