Monaco: Monaco joins hands with 'autobleue' phenomenon

Monaco gets behind the wheel of the 'autobleue'

Less than two years after 'vélos bleus' were put into operation, Nice took the ecological urban world by storm, creating a self-serve electronic car program, ‘autobleue’, in April 2011. Now, further excitement has been added to this ambitious project with a new partnerhip between Monaco and Nice.

Prince Albert and the mayor of Nice launched their partnership for the 'Autobleue' electric car program between Monaco principality and Nice.
The envirofriendly cars are available to hire from 26 locations across the French Riviera, now including Monaco.

At the Palais Princier de Monaco last Friday, H.S.H. Prince Albert II and mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, publicly unveiled their new partnership to increase the use of the Auto Bleue Electric Car (ABEC's). The program, designed to offer environmentally friendly cars for rent at a small cost, is in full swing in more than 26 locations along the French Riviera. Monaco is the latest edition.

From now on, ABEC users who hire their vehicle in Nice will be able to recharge them in public car parks in Monaco, and similarly for ‘auto bleues’ rented in Monaco whose batteries may need charging up in Nice. In addition, as of 2nd September 2011, the ABEC’s GPS system features the locations of ‘charging stations’ in Monaco. This new system will be trialled until 31st December 2012 in the principality.

With confirmed plans for 210 ABEC cars expanding to 70 stations across the city by 2012, Nice is the first French city, before Paris, to put this innovative project into place.
