Residents and experts in Marseille breathed a sigh of relief on Thursday as a World War II bomb found last December at a construction site was taken out to sea and successfully defused by experts.

It was a risky procedure and as a precaution 4,300 residents were evacuated from the area. They were able to return to their homes just after 10.30am. 

Experts took the American 250-kilogram bomb 33 kilometres off the coast of Marseille at 4pm Wednesday afternoon. 

Favourable weather conditions helped the defusal process to run smoothly.
