Provence & Côte d'Azur: Lorry driver killed after crashing into lorry carrying propane
Man dies in fireball on A8
The man, who has not yet been named by authorities, died after the lorry he was driving crashed into the truck loaded with the highly flammable fuel and caught on fire.
The accident happened around 12.30am last night on a viaduct on the A8 motorway, near to La Trinité. This morning the road was closed in both directions between east Nice and La Turbie, and between Antibes and Nice.
Closure resulted in tailbacks and traffic jams across the area this morning as commuters struggled to make their way to work. Some bus lines have also been effected by the accident with the Nice based Lignes d’Azur network offering alternative routes for passengers.
The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture has announced that there is no risk of further explosion, although 15 houses in the surrounding vicinity have been evacuated as a precaution.
