Provence & Côte d'Azur: Labour unions around will the country will be protesting tomorrow

Labour union protests tomorrow

National labour unions will hold peaceful marches in cities across the country tomorrow as part of Labour Day demonstrations. Like the rest of France, protests in the Alpes Maritimes will focus on austerity policies which unions say are increasing unemployment and forcing wage cuts.

Labour union protesters will protest in the streets of Nice tomorrow

The trade unions CGT, CFDT, FSU, Sud Solaire and UNSA have organised a total of 289 marches throughout France. In the Alpes Maritimes, demonstrations will be held in Nice, Toulon, Draguignan, Sarlernes, Saint Raphaël, Brignoles, Anitbes, Cannes, Grasse and Saint Tropez.

Major traffic disruption is expected everywhere, while in Nice protestors are expected to march on the Promenade des Anglais towards Hotel Negresco, along l’avenue des Phocéens and l’avenue Jean-Jaurès, before finishing at place Garibaldi.

Just five days ahead of the second presidential runoff, labour union leaders will be highlighting the high level of unemployment in the country, which currently stands at 2,884 million. They are demanding reform, saying incumbent President Nicolas Sarkozy’s policies favour the rich. They're calling for "substantial changes" to industrial policy and an urgent development of public services.
