Provence & Côte d’Azur: La Ligue contre le cancer takes part in unique fund raising event

Housing auction for cancer charity

In an impressive bid to raise as much money as possible for cancer research, eight apartments will be sold at auction in the French Riviera. With opening bids of up to 620,000 euros, this is certainly one charity drive that will have a major impact, both locally and nationally.

The event is organised by the president of the Alpes-Maritimes Notary Administration, Hervé Paillard, and this Friday, 25th November, will see auctions of three apartments in Nice, three in Cannet, one in Antibes, and one in Mougins. With opening bids starting between 88,000 and 620,000 euros, the unique charity event is hoping to rake in a very large amount for La Ligue Nationale contre le cancer.

Mr Paillard told the Nice Matin that he is extremely enthusiastic about the sales, hoping a considerable amount will be raised for the cancer charity. “This isn’t the first time such an auction has been organised for a charity. But it is the first time that definite sales have been so important for La Ligue Nationale contre le cancer. It is most definitely a test. The organisation thrives on donations, grants and bequests. However, the amount of bequests given to the charity is slowly decreasing; 60-70% of our actions are funded by these types of donations. Charity events like this are, therefore, key to our success.”

Money raised will help ten Nice-based cancer research laboratories, as well as a cancer unit in Marseille that specialises in clinical research and illnesses. La Ligue contre le cancer also created the Cartes d'Identité des Tumeurs programme, or 'Tumour Identity Cards', a scheme which aims to identify multiple types of tumours through gene analysis and chromosome alteration.

The auction will take place between 10am and 2.30pm. Potential buyers must come to the event prepared to pay 20% of the reserve price. “They must be able to finance some of the cost of the apartment on the day,” says Mr Paillard. After the sale, there is a ten day period where any late bidders willing to pay more than 10% of the final sale price are given the chance to buy.

Cancer affects the lives of around 8,000 people each year in the Alpes-Maritimes.
