Provence & Côte d'Azur: travellers refuse to pack up and go

Gypsies in Mandelieu dig in their heals

Having set up camp on a private field in Mandelieu on Tuesday 14th June, the gypsies seem to have taken a shine to their temporary residence and have now refused to leave.

Mandelieu is now playing host to the gypsies for longer than previously expected

After receiving a relatively nice welcome from Mandelieu, it was agreed that the gypsies would move to another site on Route de Pégomas between Grasse and Mandelieu on Thursday 19th July at 8.30pm with a police escort.

But the travellers pulled out of the agreement yesterday afternoon and local daily Nice Matin has reported that the travelling group say the alternative campsite is unsuitable for the caravans and dangerous for the children.

Despite local authorities installing skips and providing water at the new campsite, the travellers are waiting to move to a field near Cannes that will be able to accommodate the 200 caravans.
