Provence & Côte d'Azur: A new service offers hand-washing, maintenance and repairs across the Côte d'Azur

Get the gloss back into your oriental rugs

For centuries, oriental rugs and carpets have been valued as ornaments for the floor or wall. Depending on their age, type, knot tying methods and material they are often very valuable items. Jurek Biela who specialises in preserving these aristocrats of the carpet kingdom is now offering his services on the Côte d'Azur. In an interview he explained what is involved.

Expert hand-washing and repairs through to complete renovation now available on the Côte d’Azur

What does it take to maintain the colours and quality of a carpet?
Anyone who wants to enjoy the beauty of these natural fibre carpets should have them cleaned every three years, depending on how much stress the carpet is under. All it needs is a gentle wash and not a chemical treatment.
Remember an oriental carpet is a natural product. Wool is sturdy and durable, but after a while the natural oils in the fabric can be lost when removing dust and dirt. Scoured wool becomes brittle and breaks, abrasive particles settle into the pile and the carpet starts to wear out.
As oriental rugs are woven and knotted in very different ways, we get the best cleaning results with our unique hand-washing system in the Persian tradition. Only by hand can you adjust the washer to suit the age and sensitivity of the carpet to gently remove dirt. A moisturising agent sets itself protectively around the fibres to give the pile a renewed shine and suppleness. Not only does it help retain the carpet's value but it also enhances the original colours.
What should one avoid?
Never remove small stains with a chemical agent or powder - only use warm water with a little detergent or soap and always rinse it thoroughly with clean water. You should also never put plant pots directly on the carpet as they give off moisture, which gets into the carpet, leaving stains and maybe even causing it to rot in places.
If a stain cannot be removed, it is well worth consulting an expert as soon as possible. The longer you wait the harder the stain will be to remove. You should also look at the edges and fringes of your rug regularly, because if they are not attached properly then sooner or later it will lead to serious damage.
What is included in your offer?
We offer the complete service, from gentle hand-washing, to renovating the edges or fringes, to removing creases, stains and odours, to full inspections for signs of damage or over-use, to a  complete renovation, restoring your carpet to its original state.
All the work is carried out in our own workshops by hand and according to the Persian tradition. Our craftsmen have learned the craft from scratch and our Persian carpet master craftsman has over 30 years experience.
The craft of weaving, washing and repairing oriental carpets has been handed down from generation to generation in our family. My ancestors came to Germany in 1820 and founded an export company in Hamburg. Today we not only run a carpet shop in Moenchengladbach, but offer our services in London, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Denmark and now the Côte d'Azur.
How do they contact you?
The easiest way is to call and make an appointment. After seeing the carpet, we immediately send a no-obligation free estimate. Of course we pick up the carpet and return it free of charge, within a radius of up to 150 km. A hand wash usually takes seven to ten days but repairs or restoration jobs can take longer. As reliability and customer satisfaction is our top priority, the customer only pays if he is satisfied.
What if the damage seems beyond repair?
It is always worth asking us. We have had many customers who were surprised that we were able to repair quite serious damage. Recently we restored an antique silk rug of unusual dimensions (8.6m x 5.8m) - it was a case of severe discoloration as a result of water damage. First we gently discoloured the stains and then piece by piece carefully restored it to its original state. As a result the family not only got back their inheritance, the carpet had been in their possession for 80 years, but also avoided a 250,000 euro insurance claim.
