Provence & Côte d'Azur: Military bases in Marseille and Toulon ready to be deployed against Gaddafi

France prepares forces for Libya intervention

French military forces in the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region are on stand-by after a French, British and Lebanese tabled resolution calling for military intervention against Libya, was passed by the United Nations security council last night.

The agreement will allow for a ‘no-fly-zone’ over the embattled North African country and permit international militaries to launch airstrikes against Colonel Gaddafi’s forces, as the Libyan dictator tries to suppress a widespread uprising. The French foreign minister Alain Juppé appeared at the UN headquarters in New York to push through the resolution.

The government has been quick to organise its military force to use against Gaddafi. Associated Press reported earlier today that Mirage and Rafale fighter jets were ready to be deployed from bases near Istres and Marseille. The Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier in Toulon has reportedly also been prepared to be launched rapidly, if necessary.

This afternoon the Libyan foreign minister Mussa Kussa, called a ceasefire between loyalist forces and the rebels. Despite this there have been reports of loud explosions coming from the Libyan capital Tripoli earlier this evening and widespread scepticism to whether Gaddafi will remain true to his word.

Shame Germany didn't have the backbone to take down this dictator.

I would like to congratulate France and the say thank you for what your military forces are doing in Libya. It will always be remembered that France was the first to take action against a dictator who claimed, "All my people love me" as he was killing his own people. As an American who has visited France a few times and has always enjoyed your country, I would also like to say that it is good to have France and the United States working together again for the same goal. Many Americans only remember what happened in WWI and WWII and have completely forgotten that France helped the United States in our rebellion against Great Britain. I think it is better for us to stand together for freedom and liberty than to be apart. Together we will restore peace and freedom to Libya.
