First parking sensors to be installed in Nice

The first ‘Intelligent Parking’ system in France is ready to hit the streets of Nice. From today, sensors will gradually be introduced throughout the city, alleviating the frustrating task of circling the streets in search of a car park.

Mayor Christian Estrosi attended the first sensor installation today, signalling the beginning of the innovative new parking scheme.

The system is simple: selected parking spaces have a time limit and sensors. Motorists are informed when these parking spaces become available via their smartphone. The system not only reduces traffic congestion and CO2 emissions, it also prevents motorists from receiving parking fines.

Around 10,000 of the Semiac systems are expected to be installed across Nice this year.

The technology was developed by Semiacs, who manages 17 car parks and all street parking in Nice, and subsidiary company Sude, who were awarded the prize for "Best Innovative Smart City Project 2011" at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona.

A contract was signed between Nice and ERDF (Électricité Réseau Distribution France) on 22nd November 2011, allowing routing data to run trough the electrical cables of the city.

The town of Villefranche was involved in the trial.
