First in Europe: Sophia Antipolis school launches electronic bike scheme

SKEMA Business School in Sophia Antipolis has paired up with Clean Energy Planet in a bid to make students more environmentally friendly. A new self-service bike system has been introduced to the school’s campus, giving youngsters a chance to do their bit for the planet.

Following a French school travel plan analysis, students expressed a desire to change their transport habits, saying that they wanted to be more eco-friendly. Queue the first Clean Energy Planet electronic bike station in Europe, unveiled at Sophia Antipolis’ SKEMA Business School on Tuesday 22nd November.

The system is simple – students subscribe to the Pass GreenGo card for 20 euros and top it up as they go. For only 3 cents per minute, users can buy minutes and ride away. From 7pm-7am, users can enjoy the bikes for only 1 euro for the whole evening. From 9am-7pm on weekends, bike rentail is just for 2 euros.

The agreement comes after SKEMA Business School signed the declaration for Responsible Campus’ in December 2009, a vow to integrate sustainability into their programmes and building infrastructure.

Clean Energy Planet won the 2010 prize for their 'Acting Together for Energy' project, after they presented the plan for the electronic self-service bicycle station for the SKEMA campus.
