Provence & Côte d’Azur: Bungled bungee jump leads to death of employee at Lunar Park

Fatal accident at Fréjus fairground

Just days after the annual Lunar Park at Fréjus opened for the summer, a young man has been killed after a bungee jump from a giant crane went wrong. The incident comes nearly a year after nine people were injured in another accident at the park in August 2009.

According to local TV and press reports, an investigation has been launched to find out what went wrong. Possible causes could be that the elastic rope was too long or that there was a problem of communication and the young man jumped too soon before the crane had winched him up to the correct height. The victim is thought to be a casual worker who had been taken on for the summer.

The bungee jump has been a feature at the Luna Park for 25 years.

Last year a 47-metre long cable snapped on a Sky Rider in the Lunar Park. Although the people in the gondola on the ride itself were not injured as a second cable held them in position, the broken one whipped down and struck several bystanders causing minor injuries. CL
