France: Cantona rallies support from mayors

Ex-footballer wants French presidency

An unlikely contender for the French presidency has just emerged - former Manchester United striker Eric Cantona. The 45-year-old, who doesn’t have the backing of a political party, has until the end of February to rally support.

Eric Cantone needs the signatures of 500 mayors to enter the first round

In a letter published today by French newspaper Liberation, Cantona says he would like to enter the campaign to raise awareness of the limited opportunities for young people in France, saying the social injustices are “too numerous, too violent and too systematic.”

Cantona has written to French mayors to gain their support and must gather 500 signatures by the end of February to compete in the first round of elections in late April.

The former footballer made healines in 2010 by calling on people to empty their bank accounts to protest the global financial crisis.
