Provence & Côte d'Azur: Celebrate Europe Day in Marseille
It's Europe Day today
You may never have come across this annual celebration of European solidarity and harmony before but it is in fact an age-old tradition that provided the first step towards what we now know as the European Union. Today, the 9th May, is a chance for Europeans to honour the continent’s history, present and future.
Following three bloody decades of world wars that ravaged Europe and much of the outside world, French Minister for International Relations Robert Schuman proposed a groundbreaking idea: for all countries in Europe to pool together their coal and steel resources in an attempt to unify and bind together the nations who had been warring for some thirty years.
Schuman called the initiative the “first concrete foundation of a European federation”.
A number of events have been organised throughout the EU to celebrate Europe Day, including one in Marseille’s IUFM Amphitheater from 5.30pm until 7.30pm tonight. Head to the venue to find out what other events and festivals will be celebrated along the Côte d’Azur this summer.
